Frequently Asked Questions
What is the significance of the Whirling Dervish ceremony? The Sema Ceremony is a spiritual journey representing the mystical ascent of man's soul to truth and love. It is a 700-year-old tradition of the Mevlevi Order, inspired by Rumi, and is recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
Where does the show take place in Cappadocia? To preserve the authentic atmosphere, the ceremonies are usually held in historic Seljuk-era Caravanserais (ancient roadside inns). These stone structures provide a natural, mystical acoustic and ambiance that enhances the experience.
Are we allowed to take photos or videos during the ceremony?Since the Sema is a religious ceremony rather than a theatrical performance, photography and filming are strictly prohibited during the actual ritual to maintain the spiritual atmosphere. However, most venues allow a short photo session at the very end of the show.
Is there an age limit for children? While there is no strict legal age limit, the ceremony requires absolute silence for about 45 to 60 minutes. Therefore, it is generally not recommended for children under 7 years old to ensure the quietness required for the ritual.
How long does the ceremony last and what is included? The total experience lasts approximately 1 hour. Most packages include hotel transfers and a traditional religious drink, such as "Serbet," served before or after the ceremony.
Is there a dress code for the audience? There is no formal dress code, but as it is a spiritual ceremony, we recommend modest and respectful attire. It is also important to remain seated and silent throughout the performance.
